Remarkably Bright Creatures Netflix Movie: Release Date, Cast, and How “That Octopus Book” Took Over

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

If you’ve ever heard someone say, “Have you read that octopus book?” they’re usually talking about Remarkably Bright Creatures, which is officially becoming a Netflix movie. The novel by Shelby Van Pelt spent more than 64 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, thanks in large part to Marcellus, the giant Pacific octopus who readers (and OctoNation!) fell in love with!

In what will surely be the next octopus phenom since Netflix’s My Octopus Teacher, this movie is the result of a deeply beloved book building unstoppable momentum!

Netflix confirmed that Remarkably Bright Creatures will premiere on May 8, 2026. The film is directed by Olivia Newman and stars Sally Field, Lewis Pullman, Colm Meaney, Joan Chen, Kathy Baker, Beth Grant, and Sofia Black-D’Elia.

That’s a pretty stacked cast for a book that didn’t arrive with blockbuster hype, which honestly feels very on-brand for this story. We’ll explain more below…

Sally Field (Lincoln, Forrest Gump) Lewis Pullman (Top Gun: Maverick, Lessons in Chemistry) Colm Meaney (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Bring Them Down) Joan Chen (Dìdi, The Wedding Banquet) Kathy Baker (The Ranch, Edward Scissorhands) Beth Grant (Little Miss Sunshine, No Country for Old Men) Sofia Black-D’Elia (Single Drunk Female, The Night Of)

How “That Octopus Book” Took Over!

When Remarkably Bright Creatures was published in May 2022, it didn’t explode overnight.

Booksellers started noticing something funny…customers didn’t always remember the title. Or the author. They just kept asking for “the octopus book.” Over and over again!

That word-of-mouth momentum turned into book clubs, beach reads, and dog-eared paperbacks passed between friends. Then came the Read With Jenna selection, which sent it into even more homes. Before long, the book picked up the 2023 McLaughlin-Esstman-Stearns First Novel Prize, and suddenly everyone was talking about it, even if they still couldn’t quite remember the name.

When did Remarkably Bright Creatures really take off?

The cleanest inflection point is a one-two octo-punch: an early boost from Read With Jenna, followed by sustained momentum driven by reader recommendations, libraries, community reads, and booksellers personally recommending it.

At that point, a screen adaptation felt inevitable.

Netflix announced the film a while back, but now that we have a release date and confirmed cast, it’s officially real!!!!

Who Is Marcellus the Octopus?

If you’ve read the book, you already know: this story works because of Marcellus.

Marcellus is a giant Pacific octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) living in a fictional aquarium on Puget Sound, a region where giant Pacific octopuses are found in real life.

He’s observant, grumpy, wildly intelligent, and frankly smarter than most of the humans around him. (Duh! Lol)

During the aquarium’s quiet night shifts, he forms an unlikely bond with Tova Sullivan, the night cleaner, and slowly begins piecing together clues about a long-ago disappearance.

Readers enjoyed and trusted Marcellus and that’s where the magic happened.

What the Book Gets Right About Giant Pacific Octopuses

Marcellus is fictional,  but a lot of what makes him believable comes straight from real octopus biology.

Giant Pacific octos are known for:

– problem-solving skills
– keen eyesight and sensory awareness
– powerful camouflage
– escape artistry
– curiosity that borders on mischief

They also tend to live only 1–5 years, which quietly mirrors one of the book’s underlying themes: time matters. Every moment counts.

The novel takes these real traits and turns the dial up just enough, blending science with storytelling to create an octopus who feels alive on the page without pretending he’s human. (Which octopus fans appreciated!)

Why This Story Stuck

At its core, Remarkably Bright Creatures isn’t really about solving a mystery. It’s about loneliness. Connection. The quiet ways lives brush up against each other… sometimes across species.

Marcellus sees humans clearly. Sometimes more clearly than they see themselves.

That perspective is most likely why the book resonated so deeply, especially with readers who didn’t come to it expecting an octopus to be the emotional anchor. Fortunately for OctoNation, it introduced the octopus in a way that invited thousands to our social media channels with people wanting to learn more about their favorite octo-character, Marcellus.

From Bookstores to Netflix Screens

After films like My Octopus Teacher, it’s clear audiences are more open than ever to stories that center around octopuses…not as deep sea monsters, but as intelligent, curious beings with something to teach us.

Now, with a strong cast and a director known for character-driven stories, Remarkably Bright Creatures Netflix movie is about to reach an even bigger audience!

When the film drops in May 2026, a whole new group of people will meet Marcellus for the first time

And if even a fraction of them walk away wanting to learn more about real octopuses and the oceans they live in?

That’s a win in our book!!

What Happens Next?

As Netflix begins releasing trailers and press ahead of the May 2026 premiere, new audiences will meet Marcellus for the first time. And if history repeats itself, many of them will head straight to bookstores, libraries, and yes… octopus corners of the internet like OctoNation, looking to learn more! We can’t welcome them with open arms x8 🐙

As always, we’ll keep you in the loop with any updates!

Stay curious, OctoNation. 🌊🐙
